Freak Carnival accident kills 16 in Brazil

At least 16 people were electrocuted during a parade before the carnival to come upon them a public lighting cable.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown at this time. But a police spokesman said witnesses reported that a high voltage electric cable threw sparks and fell over the crowd after being beaten metal streamers and fireworks.

At least 54 other people were injured, some seriously, police officials said the small town of Bandeira do Sul, Minas Gerais, north of Rio de Janeiro, where the accident occurred last night.

The accident knocked out power and telephone service to the entire people for six hours, said police spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue.
