How Egypt remain online
The last Egyptian ISP left standing has now gone offline. Noor Group had provided services for the Egyptian stock exchange and other businesses, leading many to suspect it had been spared by the government, but Noor's networks stopped responding yesterday at 8.46 pm GMT. Earl Zmijewski of the internet access monitoring company Renesys reports that Noor is "completely unavailable".
Landlines are now the best way for Egyptian citizens to communicate with the outside world, and Google has stepped in to help Egyptian voices be heard. The company recently acquired SayNow, a service that integrates voicemail with the web. Together with Twitter it has launched Speak To Tweet, allowing Egyptians to dial international numbers and leave voicemails that are then uploaded and linked from the speak2tweet Twitter account. Nearly 500 messages have been uploaded so far.
