British marathon runner Joseph Tame is aiming to shatter the preconception that long distancing running is a lonely experience with his extraordinary iRun mobile social media studio that he plans to wear for the Tokyo marathon.
Tame is planning on running the Tokyo marathon later this month with an array of gadgetry strapped to his body.
The iRun features four iPhones on rotatable mounts, an iPad, and Android handset, three mobile Wi Fi routers, a four-in-one atmospheric monitor and a heart monitor – all to record his route round the 26-mile circuit.
A post on Tame’s website states: ‘This technology will allow me to broadcast live video on two cameras (using either skype or FaceTime to a local studio for re-broadcast), send live location/pace/heart rate data via Runkeeperon the iPhone, transmit temperature, COx/humidity/noise levels via a custom-made Android app – and do all of this while looking incredibly cool.’
Tame has admitted some of the features, such as the ‘wind turbine’, really a children’s fan, and ‘satellite dish’ on his helmet, actually a plastic bird-feeding dish, are just for decoration, but the rest of the equipment on the iRun is being used to good effect.
The runner has appeared on numerous news shows in Japan, as well as CNN, and is hoping Apple will take interest in buying the blueprints for his ingenious device.
The Briton said the rig had been created in his father’s greenhouse back in the UK over Christmas and updated upon his return to Tokyo.
It what will undoubtedly be a first, Tame will broadcast his entire marathon and the time leading up to and after the race through the numerous devices strapped to his body during the race on February 27 - around 11pm on Saturday February 26 UK time.
The marathon will be streamed through his website - www.tm2011.com – and Tame has also created a Twitter feed producing regularly updates on his progress.
