50 surgeries in 101 hours to honor World Cancer Day

In a private cancer hospital in Surat city of India’s western Gujarat state, doctors are commemorating World Cancer Day by performing 50 surgeries in 101 hours!

Renowned cancer surgeons from south Gujarat and Mumbai will set a record by performing non-stop surgeries at the Bharat Cancer Hospital and Research Institute on Surat-Bardoli.

Designated as the fourth day in February, the purpose of World Cancer Day is to raise awareness of the dreaded disease that is considered the fourth largest killer in the world and to foster its prevention, detection and treatment.

In India alone, 700,000 to 800,000 cancer cases are reported every year.

Globally, more than 440,000 people die of cancer every year and it is believed that many of the deaths could have been prevented.

The marathon surgeries will be performed free of charge to commemorate this important day of awareness.

“We have already registered 35 patients for the surgeries and the target is to operate upon 50 patients in 101 hours,” said cancer surgeon, Dr Ravi Raaj.

World Cancer Day is an association comprised of more than 350 cancer-fighting organizations in over 100 countries. It targets public awareness through global communications marketing, and encourages policy makers to make cancer a political priority.

The rest of the world should be watching and listening.

Is it?
