Policemen hit by a molotov cocktail in Athens riot

A policeman burns after he was hit by a petrol bomb during riots in Athens.

The officer was forced to remove his crash helmet and was saved by his colleague who helped to extinguish the flames.

The clashes came during a mass rally in the Greek capital as part of a general strike against the debt-crippled government’s austerity measures.

Police fired tear gas and flash grenades at rioters as 30,000 people marched through Athens.

Many were forced to take cover when youths began throwing rocks and fire bombs.

Protesters also set up road blocks to obstruct police on motorbikes, attacked shop fronts and set fire to garbage bins.

'They are hurling stones and plastic bottles. Police had to fire tear gas to disperse them,' a police official told Reuters.

Five people were injured during the demonstration after it turned violent.

Transport and other public services have been shut down as thousands protest against unpopular economic reforms.
